| The Bay Yacht Club
was formed in December 1971, by a group of people interested in
water-related activities in Corpus Christi. The word-of-mouth
organizational meeting in December 1971, drew 45 people. The first
meeting place was the Old Beach Club (next to the Landmark Condominiums
on Ocean Drive) which is now gone. As December turned to January
the first officers and directors were chosen and a burgee was
selected.
A committee was set
up to begin planning a new facility. In July of 1972, the membership
voted to acquire a floating facility to be moored in the downtown
marina that would serve as their new home. The first clubhouse
was built by the members themselves, on weekends and after work.
It was 25 by 68 feet, with limited kitchen facilities, two bathrooms,
one large air-conditioned room, and an upper sun deck. It was
moored at the end of "B" Pier. This facility was replaced
in 1986 by the current clubhouse, which is built on a 30 by 100
feet barge, and has full kitchen facilities, bathrooms with showers,
one large gathering room, an upper lounge, and an upper sun deck.
In November, 1994, the Club became debt free when the final bonds
for the construction of the new clubhouse were paid off.
BYC is a social organization
of people interested in promoting recreational boating, sailing,
marine education, and water sports activities in the area. There
are currently ten board members elected each year and a number
of standing committees appointed. The General Membership meets
twice each year.
|
| Activities range from
races, cruises, socials, educational seminars, and reduced membership
in Boat/US, to bus trips to Mexico.
|
| The club is a member
of Boat/US, which allows all individual members to join that organization
at one-half the usual fee. BYC is listed in the Register of American
Yacht Clubs published by the Yachting Club of America, which allows
all members to enjoy reciprocity in all participating yacht clubs
across the nation.
